Executive Director's Message

Bikramaditya Ghosh (Advocate)

A group of young dedicated people - LAW has always looked forward to create a more just, reasonable and a sustainable world!

Humanity today faces a global recession of values and virtues, phenomena that is alarmingly high. Such reflections are visible with an increasing frequency, resulting in offences of depraving human conduct. Our nation is now showing dangerous signs of stress and strain. It may go on like this for years; but it is equally possible that the Indian ethos may be renewed by our efforts. In these troubled times that LAW (Law for Aid and Welfare) chose a task to perform that is most needed, particularly in our nation – the task of legally empowering people to enable them to demand justice.

Our country is a democratic country as well as a welfare state. Rule of Law is the edifice on which the democratic structure has been built on which means everybody is equal in the eyes of law. In spite of this solemn principle, every day we hear news about instances of atrocities, excesses by law enforcing agencies, harassment of citizens by officials, cheating by seller of goods, exploitation of the weak, stories of discrimination, deprivation in the society besides heinous crimes and so on. In most of the cases the victims accept these suffering silently by ascribing them to fate or are afraid to protest on the grounds of further reprisals. The fact is that many times people are not aware of the law and the rights such laws confer for their protection. A number of laws have been enacted to contribute to the welfare of the socially and economically downtrodden population of the society. However, the benefits of these provisions are not reaped by them due to lack of awareness about the same.

I believe that a very good way to ensure justice is to legally empower the people to demand it. Empowering the people legally equips them to understand their rights, secure their enforcement and pursue remedies when these rights are violated.

Lack of education is the root of powerlessness, all evil and problems in which people are deprived of opportunities, choices, resources, essential services, knowledge and protection. In this sense, poverty is something more than mere lack of income, health and education. It is also people's frustration about lack of any control in deciding the destiny of their lives, their exclusion from decision-making. While the Universal Declaration of Human rights is the guiding framework under which LAW functions, it also derives its mandate from the constitutional rights promised to every citizen of the country.

As bonafide citizens of this great country it is our duty to aid in improving the law by scientific and analytical study of existing laws by comparative jurisprudence with suggestions for improvement in the administration of law and relating law to other institutions of human society. It is also our duty to emphasize through research and publication and through the character of instruction, to promote this broader base of legal education.

The overarching vision is the "Right to Life with Dignity." I sincerely believe that a life with dignity can be achieved by Legally Empowering the People to Demand it. We are committed to the mandate of making this country a land where injustice is not even heard off.
